Shabbat Shalom Shorashim families! Tuesday marked the completion of our first week of camp and now, as I look back at the first week and a half I am amazed and excited by all that we have done in such a short period of time! Last Shabbat, our theme was the Shalosh Regalim. We learned about Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot and the idea of making a pilgrimage. We discovered that we are all on a pilgrimage this summer here as we make new friends, hone new skills, become more independent, learn more about Judaism and ourselves, and grow. Shabbat Shacharit was lively and was led by many of the chanichim . We heard a beautiful d’var Torah (about Pinchas) from Eryn London, and Rabbi Eliot Malomet led Shabbat Musaf. As part of our Peulat Shabbat, we also learned about the Ten Commandments with Rabbi Danny Nevins, Dean of the Rabbinical School at JTS.
Our week continued with exciting programs. The Shorashim/Tzeirim play rehearsal is well underway and some of our chanichim got to learn sofrut (Jewish scribal arts) from a sofer! CHASHI ( half week of Israel) led us to learning the special Chashi dance and to several Israel themed peulot erev.
Shorashim’s Wednesday trip to Sportime USA was an AWESOME day filled with fun bus rides, arcade games, a rock wall, laser tag, bumper cars, a himilaya roller coaster, and a mini twister ride! Added to our return trip to camp, the delicious Carvel ice cream was a terrific treat.
July 4th and the campwide Brian Gelfand concert rocked Wingdale and now, we are looking forward to our 2nd Shabbat together. The theme of this Shabbat will be “shorashim” (“roots”). We will be exploring our roots (family histories, backgrounds, etc.) and learning about the “roots” of our friends and others in our edah.
I wish all of you a relaxing, meaningful, and enjoyable Shabbat!
