Week two in Shorashim 2011 was full of wonderful surprises and excitement. We started off the week with the Sports Clinic where chanichim worked with well-known coaches to improve their skills in basketball, soccer, volleyball, tennis, football, softball, frisbee, jump rope and hip hop. Each chanich and chancicha participated in two different sports (a “major” in the morning and a “minor” in the afternoon) from Sunday through Wednesday, and they all had a blast.
In addition to the Sports Clinic, we had a wide range of fun peulot erev (evening activities) this week, starting with the July 4th concert which was full of exciting music, patriotism and dancing, and continued with “Are You Smarter than a 6th Grader,” when the chanichim competed against Rosh Machane Aleph, Rabbi Fred Elias, to see who was “smarter.” On Tuesday night we broke out our Yom Daled, Yom Hafuch (Backwards Day), by making Israel and Camp themed pictures out of cereal and fluff. The chanichim were very creative, making images of the Kotel (Western Wall), Israeli flag, and the Camp agam (lake) and tzrifim (bunks). On Wednesday, we continued with the backwards theme and had a fancy “dinner” for breakfast, finger painted bunk banners and had a backwards talent show. We ended off the day by playing the bunkmate game, discovering who knows their bunkmate best.
Friday was boker tzrif, a morning full of fun activities with the tzrif, and our themes ranged from Boker Olympics to Boker Spa, Boker Princess Diaries, to Boker Parent Trap and Boker Indefatigable. This Shabbat’s theme is Conservative Judaism and we will be learning about pluralism in creative and fun ways, including an activity about the different ways in which we each eat an oreo as a jumping off point in our discussion. It is bound to be both interesting and engaging.
Until next week, Shabbat Shalom!!
